Dental implants can replace one or several missing teeth and represent an alternative to traditional dentures and bridgework. The advantages vary by patient and type of restoration, but always include improved chewing ability, better speech, a more secure fit of the restoration, greater comfort, and improved self-esteem.
The implant itself is made from titanium alloy. Because titanium is both strong and biocompatible, the human body fuses with it instead of rejecting it. This process, which is known as osseointegration, is the reason why dental implants are so successful at restoring functionality. It takes between 3-6 months for a recently inserted implant to heal, but when it does, it will function like the root of a natural tooth, providing a firm foundation for a replacement tooth—otherwise known as an implant crown.
To better serve his patients, Dr. Goldstein performs both the implant surgery and restoration in his Randolph, NJ office instead of sending patients to a specialist. This allows Dr. Goldstein complete control over the final results. The procedure is comfortable, and the results are remarkable. In some cases, we are now able to place a temporary implant crown immediately after placing the titanium implant.
In the case of dentures, an implant-supported overdenture fits more securely than a conventional denture. The reason for this is because conventional dentures rest on the gum tissue and have no form of mechanical attachment. An implant denture on the other hand is anchored securely in the jaw bone once it is placed over the implants and snapped into place.
We are now offering Teeth Today®. A revolutionary approach where teeth are removed, implants are immediately placed and a temporary prosthesis is immediately inserted. The final prosthesis called the Prettau Bridge® is inserted about 4 months later. This prosthesis is milled out of a solid piece of Zirconia and is virtually unbreakable. The esthetics are unbelievable!
Major benefits of dental implants include:
- Prevent the bone loss that accompanies missing teeth
- Allow healthy, neighboring teeth to remain intact (unlike bridges, which require the cutting down of adjacent teeth)
- Provide patients with a comfortable, natural-looking replacement tooth or teeth
- Can potentially last a lifetime, with proper care and maintenance
